Why isn't my business showing up on Google?
Few things are as frustrating as knowing your business exists, doing good work, and still being invisible when someone searches for exactly what you do. The good news is that for local businesses, the reasons are usually a short, fixable list. Here they are, from most common to least.
1. Your Google Business Profile is unclaimed or unverified
This is the number one reason, by a distance. Your Google Business Profile is the free listing that puts you on Maps and in local results. If you have never claimed it, or you claimed it but never completed verification, Google has little reason to show you. An unverified listing is treated as unconfirmed, and unconfirmed businesses get buried.
The fix: claim the profile, complete verification, and fill it in fully. This alone often brings a business from invisible to visible.
2. Your details are inconsistent across the web
Google wants to trust that you are who you say you are. It checks whether your name, address, and phone number match wherever they appear, on your website, your profile, directories, and social pages. If your phone number is written three different ways, or an old address is still floating around, that inconsistency makes Google less confident and less likely to rank you.
The fix: pick one exact version of your name, address, and phone number and make it identical everywhere. This is called NAP consistency, and it matters more than most people realise.
3. Your listing is missing key details
A half-finished profile competes badly against a complete one. If you have not set your categories, hours, service area, and photos, Google does not have enough to match you to the right searches.
The fix: complete every field. Choose the right primary category, add your real hours, list your services, and upload genuine photos. A full profile beats an empty one every time.
4. You have few or no reviews
Reviews are one of the strongest signals for local ranking, and they reassure the humans doing the searching too. A business with no reviews looks untested next to one with twenty.
The fix: ask happy customers to leave an honest review, and make it easy by sending them the direct link. A steady trickle of real reviews beats a sudden burst.
5. You are checking from the wrong place
Sometimes the business is showing up fine, just not for you. Google personalises results based on where you are searching from and your history. Standing inside your own shop searching your own name is not a fair test.
The fix: the honest way to check is to ask a few people in your area to search normally and tell you what they see, rather than trusting your own logged-in result.
6. Your website is weak or missing
A profile can carry you a long way, but a fast, clear website that matches your listing strengthens the whole picture and helps you rank for more searches. If you have no website, or a slow and confusing one, you are leaving signals on the table.
The fix: a simple, fast site that says clearly what you do and where, connected to your profile.
7. You expect it to happen overnight
Sometimes nothing is wrong. Local visibility builds over time, not in a day. If you have just claimed your profile or launched your site, give it room to take effect. There is a full guide on how long local SEO takes, but the short version is months, not days.
The quick checklist
- Profile claimed and verified.
- Name, address, and phone identical everywhere.
- Every profile field filled in.
- A steady stream of real reviews.
- A fast website that matches the listing.
- Realistic patience while it builds.
Get those six right and most "why can't anyone find me" problems solve themselves.
